The fighting included air strikes by the Nigerian Air Force attack.
This was in the bid by the Nigerian forces to retake towns in Adamawa State seized by the insurgents.
The towns the military are seeking to retake include Bazza, Michika and Madagali.
Casualties on the part of the military could not be confirmed as at press time, but some reports put it at 70.
The insurgents were said to have regrouped after they were initially put in disarray on Sunday.
