The bus was stolen in Ugbolu, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state only to be recovered in far away Port-Harcourt road in Owerri, Imo state.
The driver of the ill-fated bus, with registration number 14B76 DT, one Aniemeka Ekene, was lucky as he escaped death by the whiskers.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incidence, recounted how the Public Relations Manager of Delta Line Transport Company, raised the alarm to the command before men of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad swung into action
According to Kalu, a man who gave his name as Mr. Anazia, hired the Hummer bus from Delta Line office, Asaba, and one of the company drivers, the said Aniemeka Ekene was assigned to drive him (Anazia) to Ugbolu.
“However, on a spot along the way, the man asked the driver to stop so that he can check something in his farm. As soon as the driver stopped, five armed men emerged from the bush and snatched the bus from him and drove to unknown destination with the purported hirer.”
But she said operatives, with the aid of tracking device installed in the bus tracked the hoodlums to Port-Harcourt Road in Owerri, Imo State, where they abandoned the vehicle and jumped into the bush on noticing that Police Operatives were on their trail.
While she said efforts are on to track down the fleeing hoodlums, she narrated how occupants of Niger Delta Hostel of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, were under raided by armed robbers.
“Police patrol team from Abraka Police Station in synergy with vigilante men mobilized to the area. The hoodlums on sighting them took to flight and engaged the security team pursuing them in a shootout during which one of the hoodlums Oghenekewe Michael was shot on his leg and arrested.”
The suspect confessed to the crime and led policemen to his cohort one Gbenga (surname yet unknown) who was also arrested from his hideout within Abraka town.
She listed the items recovered from them to include one cut to size locally made double barrel gun, Laptops, Jewelries, one woman hand bag belonging to one of their victims
She said “the victims have indentified the exhibits as their properties.”
The PPRO also hinted of how one Shehu Sani, aged 22, a Fulani man, accosted one Bateren Okiotodoro and Nkem Egwuonwu at Sabon Kasua market, Asaba, and threatened to kill them with a dagger, if they refuse to surrender their bags.
“Consequently, the said Shehu Sani stabbed Bateren Okiotodoro on his back with a dagger, snatched the victim’s bag and fled.”
She said Nkem Egwuonwu who was with the victim at the time of the incident however recognized the suspect and raised alarm which attracted Cpl.Thompson Eniya and team attached to Department of Operations Asaba who were on duty at NNPC filling station along Asaba/Benin expressway to the scene.
The corporal quickly alerted ‘B’ Division Police station Asaba and detectives were dispatched to the scene.
She lamented that the victim gave up the ghost while he was being rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“In an effort to effect the immediate arrest of the fleeing suspect, detectives, in the same night raided the area during which the suspect –Shehu Sani was fished out and arrested through the cooperation of the Fulani community in the area.”
