Ahead of next month’s elections,
Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) have been charged to remain focused and
create a level playing field for all parties and candidates.
Chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru
Jega, gave the charge, on Monday, 26th January 2015 at the
Commission’s quarterly meeting with RECs.
The INEC Chairman noted that with the
political arena agog with campaign activities, the Commission will be “dragged
into the politisation” campaigns, but stressed the need to remain unbiased as
an umpire, in a bid to deliver free, fair and credible 2015 elections.
“As we approach the elections,
obviously all sorts of things are happening, politicians are very busy with
their campaigns, quite often, the Commission gets dragged into the politisation
campaigns; I have said consistently what we need to do, is, to remain focused
and to busy ourselves in terms of ensuring that the 2015 general Elections are
remarkably much better than the 2011 general elections. We have to continue to
ensure that whatever we do, we remain impartial and non partisan and that we
create a level playing field for all parties, all candidates and all
contestants” he said.
While acknowledging the busy schedule
of the RECs in their various states in preparation for the February polls, the
INEC boss harped on the need for the Commission to reassure Nigerians of its
commitment to a free, and fair elections saying, “we need to reassure all
Nigerians that we are ready to conduct free, fair and credible elections in the
2015 general elections; but we also need to reassure ourselves that indeed we
are ready for the business ahead of us”.
He called for maximum cooperation from
the RECs as the Commission prepared adequately for the “very daunting and
challenging task ahead”.
