Sam Allardyce has left his position as manager of England’s national team after only one match in charge after he was recorded making a series of damaging comments to undercover reporters.

Allardyce, 61, was hired on July 22 and had a contract through 2018, but the English Football Association said Tuesday that his deal had been terminated “with immediate effect” and by mutual consent.

The F.A. announcement came less than 24 hours after the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph published video of Allardyce’s appearing to offer advice on how to sidestep an outlawed player transfer practice, and also negotiating a 400,000-pound ($519,000) public-speaking contract, with reporters posing as businessmen.

The F.A. said Tuesday that Allardyce’s conduct “was inappropriate of the England manager” and that “he accepts he made a significant error of judgement and has apologised.”

In charge for 67 days, Allardyce is the shortest-serving England manager. He won his only match, a 1-0 victory over Slovakia earlier this month in England’s first qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup.

The F.A. said the former England player Gareth Southgate would take over the team for its next four matches while the organization searches for a fulltime replacement.
