The Oyo State government has enlisted the support of traditional rulers and market leaders in the state in its campaign for a cleaner and healthier environment in the state.
This is in a quest to ensure traders' compliance with the environmental sanitation and waste management laws.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Chief Isaac Ishola, disclosed this at the weekend during a meeting convened by the Olubadan of Ibadan Land, Oba Saliu Adetunji with various market leaders in the State, held at the Olubadan’s Palace, Popo Yemoja Area, Ibadan.
According to him, “to achieve total compliance with the state environmental laws, the cooperation of the traditional and market leaders cannot be over emphasized. It is expedient to use another method if the previous ones are not yielding positive results.
“Environmental issue is a collective responsibility, therefore, all hands must be on deck to ensure a healthier, cleaner and investor friendly environment,” Chief Ishola explained.
He revealed that section 4 of the 2013 environmental sanitation and waste management laws, states that nobody should dump refuse indiscriminately, while section 3 says every house hold, Industrial outfit and all commercial centres should provide waste bins and engage approved Waste Collectors, adding that section 13 of the law also stated that no one should engage in street trading.
The Commissioner however, reiterated that from February 1, 2017, the ministry will embark on enforcement exercises to sanction violators of environmental sanitation and waste management laws and consequently called on market leaders to sensitize and inform other traders and their membership on the need to desist from violating environmental regulations as the Tribunal Court would be on ground to impose fines and prosecute offenders accordingly.
In his own address, the Olubadan of Ibadan Land, Oba Saliu Adetunji Ogungunniso 1, pledged his support to get rid of dirt in the state and therefore called on the traders, various unions and the general public to comply with the state environmental sanitation regulations to ensure a healthy and habitable environment free from outbreak of diseases.
In their various responses, the Babaloja and Iyalaje, Alhaji Dahood Adisa and Alhaja Oseolorun Sifau respectively while pledging their support to government's policy and programmes commended the determination and commitment of the Senator Abiola Ajimobi led administration to ensuring a cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing and sustainable environment.
