Ambrose Olutayo Somide is a study in contrasts. A very private man doing a very public job, and managing to excel in both.
A Broadcaster, show host , TV and Radio Personality, Media Manager, Content Developer and Cultural aficionado, Ambrose, a scion of Agbole Odofin in Ago Oba in Abeokuta, the City under the rock, has always being called Doctor. This may be linked with his uncanny ability to douse tension, bring relief to any tense situation, or simply because he always had a common sense answer to most questions.
That he will become a broadcaster was an open secret known to his childhood friends, with a voice made for radio and a face crafted for TV, Ambrose is your ideal broadcaster, with the ability to move seamlessly from the serious to the lighter aspects of Broadcasting.
A 1991 graduate of Obafemi Awolowo's University, Ambrose has spent the best part of his adult life in broadcasting. He started his career with FRCN in 1983, and has spent the last three decades traversing the Media landscape.
From FRCN to OGBC to Raypower/AIT, and to midwifing Faaji FM before becoming the Head Honcho at Radio Services of Daar Communication earlier this year, He is the walking encyclopaedia, along with his Egba brother, Femi Sowoolu, in the rarified air of those who walk, talk, teach, midwife and continue to uphold the standard of radio broadcasting in Nigeria.
But despite being the Jack of all trades and Master of all, Ambrose's main forte remains development of content in form of quality programming. He has probably created more programmes than he cares to admit. From the Mercurial Minijojo to the conceptualisation and creation of Faaji FM, Lagos leading indigenous languages station.
Now sitting pretty on top of the pile, what worlds are left to conquer for this multiple award winning OAP?
Ambrose, who is not only a recipient of an honourary doctorate degree, also holds the traditional title of Ekerin Atoloye of Oke Odo, Asero in Abeokuta, told gkbnewsdigest that his only focus now is to, in his own words:" Make Faaji FM a global brand, a platform for expressing fully the culture and lifestyle of Nigerians in their own languages.
And all he wanted to be remembered for is his contribution to the growth of Yoruba/pidgin broadcasting, as well as making all the radio stations under him remain the reference points in radio broadcasting.
And without even reaching that age yet, it is obvious he has succeeded in doing that.
Happy birthday, Bro Sumer my friend, Olutayo Ara Oba, Omo Ode, Omo Korowa, Omo Ile nkole ru loba.
