WHY WE KIDNAPPED CHIEF FALAE - SUSPECTS

It was a pay back time yesterday for the suspected abductors of the former Secretary to the Federal Government, Chief Olu Falae, as they were remanded in prison.
An Ondo State High Court, sitting in Akure, the state capital remanded the five accused persons in prison custody after their arraignment.
The accused persons – Abubakar Auta, Bello Jannu, Umaru Ibrahim, Masahudu Muhammed and Idris Lawal – were alleged to have robbed and abducted Falae on September 21, 2015, at Kajola/Eyinala community in Akure North Local Government Area.
Falae, a chieftain of the pan Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, was released four days after his abduction, following the payment of N5 million ransom by his relatives.
The accused persons were charged with armed robbery and abduction.
The charge read in part: “That you Abubakar Auta, Bello Jannu, Umaru Ibrahim, Masahudu Muhammed, Idris Lawal and others now at large on or about Monday September 21, 2015 at Kajola/Eyinala community in Akure did robbed Chief Samuel Oluyemi Falae of N15,000 and his handset while armed with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.”
The prosecuting state Counsel, Mrs. Tuki Adeyemi told the court that the suspects had through their actions committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 3(11B) of the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Abduction Laws of Ondo State, 2010 and section 1(2) (A) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap R11, Vol. 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”
Earlier, members of the gang, Abubakar Auta and Idris Lawal, confessed that they received N100,000 each for the abduction of Chief Falae.
The suspects, according to the charge, were arrested by Police Special Intelligence Response Team (PSIRT) from Abuja at different locations, including Niger and Ekiti states.
The exhibits recovered by the police, according to the charge sheet, are N823,990.00, 12 Sim cards, phone used for Chief Falae’s ransom negotiation and a Red Bajaj Motorcycle with Reg No. KER 385 QA used for the kidnap operation.
However, the five suspected kidnappers, who were represented by Mr. Abdulramon Yusuf, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them when it was read to them.
Delivering his ruling, the trial judge, Justice Williams Olamide ordered the five accused persons to be remanded in custody, at Olokuta Prison, Akure.
The court adjourned the matter to November 10, 2015.
The suspects, Abubakar Auta and Idris Lawal while fielding questions from journalists before they were arraigned in court admitted to be part of the perpetrators of the abduction of Falae.
The duo, who fingered one Baba Uro, now at large, as the arrowhead of the kidnap said they got N100,000 each from the ransom paid before the elder statesman was released.
They also confessed that the 77-year old politician was abducted in his farm at Ilado in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State by members of their gang.
The two suspects, who are among the five suspects standing trial for the alleged kidnap of Falae said they were arrested in Niger State.
Also, the suspects said they had not spent the money realised from the abduction of Falae.
