Five years after his death, all is now set to honour fuji creator, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister.
A major aspect of the event is the presentation of a book titled The Maestro, Barrister’s musical biography written by a civil servant and pastor, Akintunde Akinteye.
The event, holding at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja on December 19, has Otunba Adebisi Adesanya as the chief launcher, Senator Gbenga Asafa as the chairman, with Governors Akinwumi Ambode and Abiola Ajimobi of Lagos and Ogun states attending as special guests.
According to Akinteye, Barrister’s music is rich, philosophical and a great tribute to the Yoruba worldview.
He says, “Barrister was one man in the fuji music world with a record of successive hit albums, all of which would remain evergreen for life. With a total of 146 albums and countless number of performances, he remains the only fuji musician with such a feat.”
The Maestro is bound to tickle the memory of many of Barrister’s fans, especially when they see many of his pictures that are celebrated in the book.
At the book presentation, the artiste’s songs will be played while his admirers are expected to dance to them. Besides, the organisers have plans to stage a quiz to test fans’ knowledge of Barrister’s music.
Other aspects of the memorial programme is a concert holding the following day.
This is expected to feature artistes that include Wasiu Ayinde K1 de Ultimate, Osupa Saheed, Pasuma, Adewale Ayuba and Barrister’s contemporary, Kollington Ayinla.
Observers say the programme is coming at an auspicious time for fuji. Apart from the fact that Barrister is believed to deserve all the accolades he can get, based on his skills and huge investment in the evolution and growth of traditional music, the surviving artistes also need to re-engineer it, so that it can shake off the pressure that genres such as hip hop and afro hip hop are currently putting on it.
