MY TEN KOBO; FASHOLA AND THE JOURNEY TO SANITY

For those who have been following my posts, blogs and analysis in the past few years, it is obvious I am not a big fan of Fashola.

But my disagreement with him is based on execution, not the formulation, of ideas.
He is one of the very few in charge of public policy formulation who are policy wonks.
These are people who normally takes both an holistic and pragmatic view of societal needs, and then lay a masterplan on how to achieve it in the short, medium and long terms.
As anybody who has worked with those we call journeymen, wether in the public or private sectors, whose sole interest is in the short term profit or gratification, see such thinking people are misfits, lazy daydreamers, and if you like, unproductive grandstanders.
It is not peculiar to the black man, but it is prevalent in their work place. That is why the idea of a Think Tank is seen more as a luxury than a necessity.
Even those who copied the idea of a Presidential or Gubernatorial Libraries see them more as a brick and mortar nod to their immortality, and less as an ideas and policy formulation vehicle to better the lot of society.
That is why, when once in a while, ideas people get to position of authority, you can see and feel their work more as building blocks than that of a finished product.
As a Researcher and a Strategist, it amuses me when people just open their mouth and spew rubbish as policy, without a thorough understanding of what, where, when, why and how their new assignments would be impactful on the Society in the long run.
Fortunately, this present administration has about three or four policy wonks in place.
Just like Dr. Akin Adeshina stood out in this regard during the Jonathan years, I expect the same level of thoroughness in articulation, formulation and implementation from Rotimi Amaechi, Tunde Fashola, Ogbonanya Onu and Kayode Fayemi.
A couple of days ago, Fashola laid out his roadmap for Roads, Power and Housing.
As policies go, there are a few places than things dont add up, but it was on the whole a fantastic workable policy, realistic and achievable, once the political will is there.
I am also eagerly looking forward to Kayode Fayemi's roadmap on solid minerals, Amaechi's roadmap on an extensive integrated Transport Network and Dr.Onu's policy on transforming inventions lying fallow in various research institutes to practical use.
I look forward to a period when we will have robust debates on deliverable and measurable developmental issues, and less about senile Senators and vowing and pledging governors.
My Ten Kobo.
