There is something about Tunji Disu, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander, Rapid Response Squad, RRS, when it comes to awards.
The Ajegunle born crime fighter is a throwback to old school policemen, you know, back in the day before the advent of social media and the 24 hours news cycle, who just wanted to get on with the job of providing security with minimum fuss.
But you cannot be the head of a Squad created to serve as first responders in Africa's most viable real estate and expect to remain anonymous.
Lagos State is moving at a rate that in a few years will leave at least thirty other states behind. Already home to twenty one million inhabitants and at least another ten moving in and out on a daily basis, the RRS must not only be vibrant, but also proactive.
While the Lagos Command, under the mercurial Mr. Fatai Owoseni, CP, another cop of the old school, has been on top of stuff, but RRS, with such a high level of infusion of gadgets and resources, was expected to serve above and beyond the call of duty.
And this they do on a daily basis, without expectations of reward, just doing what they know how to do best; fight crime.
But the goldfish, as they say, has no hiding place.
In the space of one week, in two countries, RRS garnered FIVE Awards.
First, they got an Award in South Africa, as the best police squad in West Africa, ditto for Lagos State government and the commander himself.
And then a few days later, more honors rolled in.
And then a few days later, more honors rolled in.
While awards are not new to Alhaji Ridwan Olatunji Adio Disu, Omo baba elepo, Oko iya Tunji, the man who cleaned out criminals in Owo, the conqueror of the criminals in Port Harcourt, these ones deserve being celebrated.
Congratulations, I know silent waters run deep, and just like in Judo where you hold the highest belt, These awards would be the stepping stones to bigger achievements.
Ore mi, I am, as always, proud of you, LASU is proud of you, AJ city is proud of you, and Lagos State is proud of you.
Continue to excel, Askari
My Ten Kobo.
