The Akwa Ibom state Liaison office in Abuja has been locked down by
protesters over the alleged failure of Governor Godswill Akpabio to
fulfill his promise to pay each staff N50,000 for travelling home to
vote for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the recent general
elections.
The protesting staffers, who noted that the governor promised to pay them generous Christmas bonus for 2014 but has so far failed
to keep his words, explained that he had promised them general
financial incentive if they could travel to Akwa Ibom from their Abuja
base to vote for his anointed candidate in the governorship election.
Perceiving the offer as irresistible, the protesters said many of them
travelled the over 634 kilometres by road to vote for the state PDP
governorship candidate on April 11, 2015.
They regretted that
over a month since they returned, Akpabio has failed to pay up, even
though his anointed candidate won the election.
It was gathered
that having quietly pressurized Akpabio for weeks, the staff ran out of
patience and resorted to protesting on Monday to compel the governor to
pay before handing over to his successor on Friday.
