LAGOS SAFETY COMMISSION, FRSC, COLLABORATE ON ROAD SAFETY AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN

The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Hakeem Dickson has pledged the support of  Lagos State Government through the Commission to the Lagos State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) while receiving the Sector Commander Mr. Hyginus Omeje and his team who paid a courtesy visit to the Commission recently.


The Director-General noted that the FRSC is one of the most vibrant Government agencies in Nigeria and implored them to leverage more on digital equipment to carry out their functions effectively.

He called for more collaboration with other relevant agencies such as the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority LASTMA, Vehicle Inspection Office VIO and the Police amongst others.

Commenting on school bus system and students’ safety, the DG noted that Schools that cannot afford to run a School bus system that meets the requisite safety standard should engage Private School Bus Operators who are professionals adding that safety standard requires that school buses should have two exits. 

Halso called for a stakeholders meeting with all relevant agencies on road safety among school Children.

The Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC Mr. Hyginus Omeje commended the Commission for being a vibrant agency of the Lagos State Government and the only Safety agency in Nigeria. He noted that the collaboration between the two agencies is a step in the right direction towards implementing a Safety Management System in the country. 

He emphasized that the collaboration is important in the actualization of some of its mandates, one of which is building road safety culture among school children, as the aim of the FRSC is to “catch them young” by establishing Road Safety Clubs in Schools to inculcate in school children, a good road Safety culture.

He also indicated that the initiative will help drive the road safety campaign in schools as students are taught about safety tips on the road coupled with the use of quiz to drive the message.

He also commended the special interest given to schools by the Commission which he said is a reflection of the concern of Lagos State Government to the safety of School children.
