MY TEN KOBO:WHEN BRUTUS CAME TO TOWN

Yesterday, I was a panelist on Goldberg's Ariya Repete Roundtable, which serves as the intellectual percussor to the annual talent hunt and celebration of indigenous musical form of the Yoruba nation.
One recurring theme of discourse was the role that Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, the generally acclaimed creator of Fuji Music.

There is a revisionist school of thought that tend to dispute the fact of his creation, despite years and years, and tons of evidence to support that position.
Its been fifty one years since Barrister created Fuji sound, an incident that was triggered from his movement from his old ajisari group, led by one muraino, to join the Apapa tailor/composer, but who never sang Fuji for a day, Jibowu Barrister, in 1966.
Detractors had spent tons of space to refute the claim, all without success.
They said one person sang faaji first, and that Fuji was a corruption of Furuji, but etymologists will tell you that the root of a word is relative to it's context, and therefore their assertion is unscientific.
The Fuji music that Barrister plays was created by him, for him and through him. He is Fuji. He designed it, named it, set the template, decoded its template, defined its range, and was the major proponent till he died.
When people moved from Were to Ajisari, they are free to move in any directon. Saka played Sakara, Epo Akara played Awurebe, Barry played Fuji sound, a derivative of Barrister system of Ajisari genre.
So yesterday. One Fuji musician, Wasiu Ishola Anifowoshe, who goes under the stage name of Wasiu Ayinde, claimed a filial closeness to Barrister, and tried to deny Barrister his creation!
Unfortunately, he spoke last, so there was no room for refutal.
But Ayinde Commissioner is still alive, as well as Iyanda Sawaba, those who were there when Barry made his claim, who are older than Wasiu. Shaura Shalimar, the creator of saje, and Wasiu's contemporary, is still alive, and when the time is ripe, all will be revealed.
For every Judas and Brutus out there, remember what Barrister sang about alabosis?
Alabosi a ma lowo, alabosi a ma bimo, alabosi a mabimo, sugbon atunbotan alabosi, kii dara ni igbehin aiye won.
Adabi is the ultimate karma.
Continue to rest in peace, creator of the Fuji genre.
