Boko Haram: How I escaped Gwoza attack – Survivor

Boko HaramTwo weeks after the Boko Haram attack on Gwoza town in Borno State, a resident of the area, Mallam Muhammad Umar, who narrowly escaped being killed, said he spent nine days hiding in the ceiling of a room.
Umar said his other saving grace was that he had access to water every night.
Umar, who narrated his plight on the Hausa Service of the BBC, monitored  in Jos, Plateau State, said he would everyday go down from the ceiling to drink water and go back to his hideout.
He did this for nine days.
According to Umar: “The very day the insurgents invaded Gwoza town, I quickly went up to the ceiling of my room and hid because I have no other choice.
“I spent good nine days hiding.
“Every night, I would go down to drink water and go back.
“That was how I survived for nine days.”
On how he was able to escape from Gwoza, Umar said: “We managed to go out in the night to a nearby bush and the following day, we headed to Madagali in Adamawa State on foot.”
He narrated further: “On our way to Madagali, we saw countless dead bodies lying on the ground.”
He however said that on their way ot Madagali, women become their watchdog on the road to ensure that the insurgents were not laying ambush for them.
He said whenever the women informed them that the insurgents were not present, then they advanced untill they reached Madagali.
Umar also hinted that from the gunshots he heard, it was very obvious the guns in the possession of the insurgents were more powerful than that of the soldiers in Gwoza.
He said this must have enabled the insurgents to chase away the security personnel from Gwoza.
