Osun Elections: The Yorubalization of Religion
Now that the elections are over and a winner declared, I am sure the post mortem analysts would bombard us q whys and therefores, most of them would be long on conjectures and short on facts.
First, I am relieved that Aregbe won. Not because of any altruistic reasons like he was a performer, or that Omisore was a bad product, not even to situate it in the grand scheme of national or regional politics. While all those are correct, they are fleeting, and therefore, temporary.
I am glad because had he lost, it would have been a huge victory for those characters who wanted to use religion to drive a wedge into the socio political landscape of the west to gain political advantage.
While it may look like a deft political move in the short run, the damage long term would have been catastrophic. The entire schism in the north started the moment they stopped seeing themselves as one people united by language and culture, but through the narrow lens of religion.
The Yoruba in the main have always been areligious. We just don't put the same premium as the far north put into Islam,or the east into catholicism, we are even not as traditional in religion as the edos. We are far more culturally inclined than religious.
So you can imagine my consternation when Yoruba are now being asked to pick sides based on religion. One, I don't know any family without a mixture of the three, what my late father called the yorubanisation of religion, which I intepreted as the socialization of religion, after all, we alone, are favoured by the gods, we alone, know the meaning of life., and whatever religion comes to our land, we will force it to conform to our ways, bar none. But I digress.
Anyhow, I hope this result would slow down, if not halt, those proponents of this dangerous mind set, and hope they would think of ways of bettering our lot in the west, instead of asking for power solely based on religion.
Congratulations to the inedible Danguro, this is a mandate for more dividends,
Eku ajabo......
