Six newly appointed National Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were sworn-in yesterday by the President, Muhammadu Buhari, at the Council Chambers, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
The President congratulated them for the appointment, saying that their inauguration came at a critical moment in the history of the country.
He congratulated the Commission for the successful conduct of the Edo and Ondo Governorship elections and other elections in the country.
"I sincerely congratulate you for this appointment. We went through your records to confirm your appointment”, President Buhari stressed.
He said that his administration was concerned about the integrity of the electoral process and urged the new Commissioners to be fair to all Nigerians.
The President said his administration wanted every Nigerian to use the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs). He urged the Commission to continue the use of Smart Card Reader (SCR) in subsequent elections.
The newly sworn National Commissioners are:
1. AVM Ahmed Tijani Mu'Azu (North-East);
2. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, (North-Central);
3. Engr. Abubakar Ahmed Nahuche, (North-West);
4. Prof. Okechukwu Obinna Ibeanu, (South-East);
5. May I. Agbamuche-Mbu, (South-South); and
6. Dr. Adekunle Ladipo Ogunmola, (South-West).
Responding on behalf of the newly inaugurated National Commissioners, Prof Ibeanu thanked the President for appointing them to serve and pledged to discharge their duties to the best of their ability and in accordance with the Oath of Office they had sworn to.
At a brief reception for the new National Commissioners at the INEC headquarters, yesterday, the Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, welcomed them, saying they were coming when the Commission had almost concluded all by-elections and was preparing for the conduct of the 2019 general elections, which he pointed out was around the corner.
Professor Yakubu said: "our joy is not only in welcoming them but recognizing the skills they are bringing in to the Commission.”
The Chairman reiterated the commitment of the Commission to deepening Nigeria’s democracy and reforming the electoral process.
Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, the only female among the newly appointed National Commissioners, responded on behalf of the others. She pledged that they would serve in truth, fairness and righteousness and that they would strive to make the country proud.
