IGP ORDERS INVESTIGATION INTO BRUTAL ATTACK

IG Orders Probe Into Police Attack On Couple
The Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has ordered an investigation into the brutal attack on a couple, Mr and Mrs. Ijeh Smith, by a policeman, Dada Ogunsanya in Lekki, Lagos.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, said the officer involved had been identified and is already undergoing administrative trial.
“All other officers whose conduct did not speak well on the incident are also being sanctioned, preparatory to further necessary action,” the statement added.
It stated that the IG ordered a full scale investigation into the matter in line with his commitment to protect and uphold the human rights of all Nigerians and residents.
The PUNCH had reported on Wednesday that Ejeh and Grace were going home in a taxi when Ogunsanya and six other police officers patrolling the area flagged down their cab at the Lekki Roundabout.
The policeman was said to have asked the cab driver, Ndubuisi Iheaka, to open his boot for a routine check.
He allegedly asked the couple to alight the cab when they asked him to stop flashing his torch on them since the vehicle’s inner lights were on, but during the argument that ensued, the police officer allegedly hit Ejeh in the eye with the butt of his rifle and punched his wife in the face.
The IG reiterated the determination of the Force to abide by the contents of the newly launched NPF Human Rights Practice Manual, stressing that no abuse of human rights will be tolerated in the Force.
Meanwhile, the IG has called on all his officers especially the members of Inspectorate and rank and file of the Force to remain resolute in pursuit of their statutory duties as the management team is bent on ensuring that they get their welfare entitlement as and when due.
He also noted that the problems confronting the Nigeria Police Force are being addressed.
He asked the personnel to distance themselves from any act capable of jeopardizing public peace or that may affect the nation’s nascent democracy.
Abba further warned that he would not condone any act of indiscipline, noting that any person or group of persons caught making inciting statement in the Force would not only be punished internally, but would also be made to face the wrath of the law.
He assured all Police personnel that efforts are being made by the present Management Team of the Force to address the challenges and improve on personnel welfare which includes promotions, courses, issuance of uniforms among others.
